Welcome to WyldBlu Designs. My name is Rachel. I am the artist and maker of these handcrafted leather goods. All leather goods are made by me in my home studio in Southern California.
The idea of starting a creative business took shape on an 8 day backpacking trip through the High Sierra Trail. Surrounded by the rugged, wild beauty, I was inspired to blend my love for the outdoors with beautiful, natural materials that serve an everyday purpose. I have been sewing for nearly two decades and wanted to use my skills to create wearable art. At the time, I wasn’t quite sure what medium I would choose to do. Until one day, I was shopping for a purse when I couldn’t find what I wanted. So I bought a bag of scrap leather and dove straight in to making my own. I had always wanted to work with leather. From then, I was hooked and I realized that this was the avenue I wanted to create goods for others.
I grew up watching my grandmother masterfully craft clothing for us often and was always inspired by her extreme talent. It wasn’t until later in life that I started to really learn to sew. I am mostly self taught, as my grandmother was already passed at this time. My mom showed me a few basics and then left me to figure out the rest. Those years of sewing clothing really opened my mind to possibilities. I could make anything if I learned the skills. I realized that I love designing. I love putting things together and I could easily look at fabric and see the final outcome in my mind. Designing purses for people has become a passion. I am always working at my craft and trying to find ways to improve what I make.
Other things I enjoy are songwriting, singing, playing guitar, camping, outdoor climbing, surfing, backpacking, gardening, traveling, and experiencing new people, places, and cultures. I enjoy cooking at home most days and a good cup of home brewed coffee.
As an enrolled member of Mohawks of Kahnawake, my connection to my culture plays a significant role in my work. With each piece I make, I aim to tell a story-of the mountains, the rivers, the flowers, the animals, and of our experiences in these wild places. The places that connect us to who we are. My goal is to create functional art that we can use; accessories that tell a story. By purchasing from WyldBlu Designs, you are getting a truly handcrafted item that comes directly from the artist from start to finish. A unique, one of a kind piece that will take on its own story as you use it. Thank you for being interested in my work!
